Edging towards perfection: choosing the right colour for your garden

30 March 2025

Garden edging is more than just a functional element – it's the defining line that transforms your outdoor space from ordinary to extraordinary. One of the most common questions we are asked at EverEdge NZ is ‘What colour garden edging is best to choose?’.

The power of colour in garden design

When it comes to landscape edging, colour is your secret weapon. Whether you're creating a sleek modern garden, a traditional cottage-style space, or a vibrant botanical haven, the right metal landscape edging makes all the difference.

EverEdge offer an unparalleled versatility for garden enthusiasts across New Zealand. From the Classic range of galvanised and powder coated steel edging choose from an earthy brown or timeless black garden edging; or choose our stunning Cor-ten garden edging which develops a rust-like patina with the passage of time.

Match your garden's personality

Every garden tells a story, and your garden edging should be its punctuation mark. Here's how to choose the perfect colour:

Natural and traditional gardens

Brown edging seamlessly blends with earthy surroundings, creating a soft, organic border to complement abundant greenery. It's the perfect choice for gardens that celebrate natural landscapes and want a subtle, sophisticated definition.

Modern and minimalist spaces

Black steel landscape edging creates sharp, clean lines that bring structure and contemporary elegance. It's ideal for gardens with geometric layouts, providing a bold statement that defines spaces with precision and style.

Rustic and evolving designs

Corten steel is often used for sculptures and installations, and with good reason. This steel edging offers a unique solution for those seeking character and depth. As this remarkable material ages, it develops a rich, warm rust patina that tells a story of time and transformation. Perfect for garden bed edging that grows more beautiful with each passing season.

Practical considerations other than aesthetics

EverEdge steel garden edging isn't just about looks – it's engineered for durability. Unlike other materials, EverEdge products withstand New Zealand’s weather conditions, from driving rain to summer’s heatwaves.

Low maintenance: darker colours like brown and black naturally conceal dirt and algae, reducing cleaning requirements.

UV resistance: EverEdge steel edging maintains its colour integrity, preventing fading and the need to replace it.

Versatility: suitable for garden paths, flower beds, lawns and edging for driveways which means your defined garden spaces are united by sharing the same material and colour of edging.

Design tips for garden edging products

A red lawn mower is cutting grass on a gravel road
30 July 2025
Winter might give you a break from summer’s relentless mowing schedule, but it’s no time to forget about your lawn. While grass growth noticeably slows in the cooler temperatures, your lawn still needs some attention through the colder months. With just a little care now, you’ll be rewarded with a healthier, more resilient lawn that requires less maintenance and attention come spring – and at the heart of a healthy lawn is EverEdge garden edging . Mow smart Whereas growth warm-season varieties of grasses like kikuyu, couch, and buffalo slow, cool-season grasses such as perennial rye, fescue, and Kentucky blue grass remain active through winter and benefit from regular mowing. Every 3–4 weeks should do the trick, depending on growth. Keep the mower height up a little higher than you usually would set it to allows for a thicker leaf area to absorb more light and helps the lawn stay robust. Mow on a dry day and use a catcher to reduce fungal issues. Sharpen mower blades and clean them between cuts to prevent disease spread - healthy grass starts with clean tools. Light and airflow matter Low winter sun and a change to trees can put your lawn under stress. Your lawn needs light to be able to photosynthesise so where necessary, prune overhanging branches to allow more light through to vulnerable areas of lawn. Regularly raking leaves prevents the blanket of tree debris smothering the lawn and helps reduce the risk of disease. Moss and fungal issues thrive in damp, low-light conditions, so improving air and light circulation is key. Feed roots, not leaves Feeding your lawn in winter isn’t essential, but it can be beneficial - particularly in warmer regions or for cool-season grasses. But it’s important to choose a formula that supports root development and soil biology – this helps to improve resistance to stress and fungal issues.
