Driveway success: transforming your home’s exterior with steel edging

20 May 2024

Your home is a sanctuary where you can experience peace, joy and comfort. But people often solely focus on the interior of their homes and overlook the exterior for the pleasures it can bring. A well-maintained driveway immeasurably enhances how a property looks while creating a welcoming and warm first impression. Many homeowners think about kerb appeal only when they're selling their house. Yet, maintaining and improving the exterior of your home brings daily satisfaction each and every time you come home or look out of a window.

Driveways often fall victim to neglect despite their critical role in functionality and how the home is perceived and enjoyed. Signs of neglect include overgrown vegetation, cracked surfaces, pooling rainwater and uneven edges. Regular maintenance and attention are required to refresh and sustain the aesthetic and safety of the driveway.

In this article, EverEdge NZ share how steel landscape edging transforms driveways and garden designs, while delivering exceptional bonus benefits too.

Drive edging to complement the property and garden design

With the opportunity to choose between CorTen or Classic galvanised powder-coated steel edging your drive’s design can be tailored to perfection. Each option offers distinct characteristics to harmonise with your property's aesthetic and landscaping vision. Its characteristic flexibility allows it to conform effortlessly to the curves of your driveway, garden beds, and pathways, ensuring a seamless integration to enhance the overall flow of the outdoor space. This versatility not only simplifies installation but also allows for creative design possibilities, such as defining different garden zones and creating striking visual contrasts.

Choose from CorTen or Classic galvanised powder-coated steel edging to amplify your property and garden design. Whether you prefer a rustic look or a sleek contemporary edging finish, there's an option to complement the property for a cohesive aesthetic.

What’s the difference between Corten steel edging and Classic?

Corten steel edging and Classic steel edging offer distinct aesthetics and functionality in garden design. Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, develops a unique rust-like appearance through the natural weathering process, a warm and rusty hue that blends seamlessly with natural surroundings. Its earthy tones and rugged texture promote a sense of organic harmony, making it ideal for contemporary and rustic landscapes alike. Corten steel's natural patina not only adds visual interest but also forms a protective barrier, enhancing durability against corrosion and weathering.

On the other hand, Classic steel edging boasts a polished and timeless appeal. Its clean lines and sleek finish lend a sophisticated touch to garden borders and pathways. Classic steel edging is versatile, complementing various design styles from formal to minimalist. EverEdge’s Classic steel edging is available in brown and black, its enduring elegance makes it a popular choice for traditional and modern gardens alike.

Ultimately, the choice between Corten steel and Classic steel edging depends on the desired aesthetic and visual preferences, and the overall design vision for the garden space. Both steel garden edging options are climate resistant and heavy duty, strong enough to drive over for decades.

Defines borders and clear lines of driveway edging

Whether your drive is made of concrete, tarmac, asphalt or gravel, drive edging adds structure and prevents weeds or lawn from encroaching. By installing lawn edging along the perimeter of a driveway, a clear delineation is created between the driveway and greenery or hardscape features.

If visitors to your property regularly accidentally drive onto the lawn, you will be familiar with the damage tyres cause over time. The weight and pressure of vehicles flattens grass blades, disrupts soil structure and impedes root growth, leading to thinning, yellowing and bare patches. This damage compromises the health and visual appeal of the lawn and will need attention to reverse.

Retrofitting steel edging acts as a visual and physical barrier, clearly defining the boundaries of driveways and helps safeguard grass from tyre damage, maintaining its health and appearance while preserving the overall integrity of the landscape design. The clear division of the drive and the surrounding landscape delivers a long lasting low maintenance, polished and tidy finish.

Steel edging improves driveway safety

In addition to enhancing the appearance of a driveway, steel edging serves as a multifunctional solution to enhance driveway safety. The demarcation between driveway and landscaped areas helps to guide drivers where to park safely, reducing the risk of intruding into areas where people maybe, but also protecting lawns and garden beds.

EverEdge NZ steel edging is essential for controlling loose driveway materials like gravel and sand, as well as garden debris such as leaves and branches, all of which can create skid risks for vehicles. By keeping these materials within the defined driveway space, the edging encourages a clean and debris-free drive, decreasing the opportunity for slipping or skidding accidents. Additionally, it prevents erosion and shifting of the driveway's materials, reducing the need for costly maintenance and repairs in the future. This proactive approach to managing driveway materials not only enhances safety but also contributes to the overall cleanliness and tidiness of the outdoor space. In essence, steel edging not only enhances safety but also saves on long term maintenance expenses by preserving the integrity of the driveway surface.

Edging improves drive drainage management

Steel edging serves as a vital component in garden design, especially concerning drainage management, which can significantly influence driveway functionality. Proper drainage is crucial to prevent water pooling and soil erosion, particularly in areas with heavy rainfall or sloped terrain.

Edging acts as a physical barrier preventing soil and debris from encroaching onto the drive's surface and clogging drainage channels. By strategically placing steel edging along garden borders or adjacent to driveways, landscape designers can control the impact of rainwater by channelling it towards designated drainage points, ensuring efficient runoff and reducing the risk of flooding or water damage. By maintaining the integrity of surrounding landscaping, excess water is directed away from vulnerable areas and garden beds and pathways remain stable. This prevents soil erosion and sediment buildup, which can otherwise compromise driveway integrity over time. Ultimately, integrating steel edging into garden design enhances both aesthetics and functionality, ensuring optimal drainage and prolonging the lifespan of driveways.

A red lawn mower is cutting grass on a gravel road

Winter might give you a break from summer’s relentless mowing schedule, but it’s no time to forget about your lawn. While grass growth noticeably slows in the cooler temperatures, your lawn still needs some attention through the colder months. With just a little care now, you’ll be rewarded with a healthier, more resilient lawn that requires less maintenance and attention come spring – and at the heart of a healthy lawn is EverEdge garden edging . Mow smart Whereas growth warm-season varieties of grasses like kikuyu, couch, and buffalo slow, cool-season grasses such as perennial rye, fescue, and Kentucky blue grass remain active through winter and benefit from regular mowing. Every 3–4 weeks should do the trick, depending on growth. Keep the mower height up a little higher than you usually would set it to allows for a thicker leaf area to absorb more light and helps the lawn stay robust. Mow on a dry day and use a catcher to reduce fungal issues. Sharpen mower blades and clean them between cuts to prevent disease spread - healthy grass starts with clean tools. Light and airflow matter Low winter sun and a change to trees can put your lawn under stress. Your lawn needs light to be able to photosynthesise so where necessary, prune overhanging branches to allow more light through to vulnerable areas of lawn. Regularly raking leaves prevents the blanket of tree debris smothering the lawn and helps reduce the risk of disease. Moss and fungal issues thrive in damp, low-light conditions, so improving air and light circulation is key. Feed roots, not leaves Feeding your lawn in winter isn’t essential, but it can be beneficial - particularly in warmer regions or for cool-season grasses. But it’s important to choose a formula that supports root development and soil biology – this helps to improve resistance to stress and fungal issues.
