Elevate your garden style with custom steel raised beds

25 September 2023

When it comes to design, you are likely already familiar with how the best garden edging makes all the difference. It provides structure and definition to paths, lawns and garden beds, separating the zones and maintaining their shape and integrity. What you may not have thought about is using steel landscape edging for custom-raised beds.

People in the Andes used raised beds in 300 BC to grow crops and prevent soil erosion. They are still popular and effective for irrigation today. Raised beds are a great way to grow plants, from fruit and vegetables to beautiful flowers and shrubs. Raised beds are practical and stylish, providing improved drainage and protection from weeds in your garden.

How to optimise the success of your raised beds

If you are planning to introduce raised beds to your garden, planning is essential. Think carefully about where you are going to position them. The best location is north-facing and gets 6-8 hours of sun per day. The morning sun is better for plants than the afternoon sun.

Before committing to a location, be mindful of irrigation. When setting up an irrigation system or watering manually, put the beds near the water source for easy access.

Choose the best type of material for your raised beds. There are different materials you can use.

Timber is cheap but needs maintenance and care, and eventually it will rot. Stone or brick are more durable, but they require professional installation and are permanent structures. Metal is the best material for raised bed garden edging because it lasts long, looks great, and needs no maintenance.

Metal garden edging is easy to install. It is also quick to install. This means that you can do it yourself without needing help from someone else.

You can use it for your raised bed project. With no additional labor costs associated with installation, metal provides an affordable raised bed solution.

Steel garden edging from EverEdge NZ

5 reasons why metal landscape edging is best for raised garden beds

1.   Steel garden edging is durable

Metal landscape edging demonstrates exceptional durability and withstands climate extremes without any impact. Unlike wood or plastic edging, steel edging withstands the elements without rotting, warping, or deteriorating over time. Once installed, it remains structurally sound and needs no further maintenance.

2.   Achieve clean and crisp aesthetics

With sleek lines and well-defined borders, metal landscape edging delivers a clean and crisp aesthetic to your garden design. Metal borders go well with various garden styles, providing a modern or rustic appearance with weathered Cor-ten.

3.   Metal landscape edging stops weeds

Landscape edging prevents weeds and unwanted grass from encroaching into the raised beds. By using a barrier, it stops weeds from spreading, saving time on weeding and keeping the garden tidy.

4.   Steel garden edging is easy to install

You can easily install steel landscape edging, even if you're not good at DIY or have few garden tools. This includes non-regular shapes. EverEdge landscape edging is customizable and easy to install in sections. It fits any space and provides a simple setup.

5.   Steel edging is versatile

Metal garden edging is available in different colours, finishes, and heights. This makes it easy for you to order according to your garden's layout and style. The metal is incredibly workable and can bend to produce curved shapes. Use metal rings for strong circles or create curved or straight borders with EverEdge garden edging.

A red lawn mower is cutting grass on a gravel road

Winter might give you a break from summer’s relentless mowing schedule, but it’s no time to forget about your lawn. While grass growth noticeably slows in the cooler temperatures, your lawn still needs some attention through the colder months. With just a little care now, you’ll be rewarded with a healthier, more resilient lawn that requires less maintenance and attention come spring – and at the heart of a healthy lawn is EverEdge garden edging . Mow smart Whereas growth warm-season varieties of grasses like kikuyu, couch, and buffalo slow, cool-season grasses such as perennial rye, fescue, and Kentucky blue grass remain active through winter and benefit from regular mowing. Every 3–4 weeks should do the trick, depending on growth. Keep the mower height up a little higher than you usually would set it to allows for a thicker leaf area to absorb more light and helps the lawn stay robust. Mow on a dry day and use a catcher to reduce fungal issues. Sharpen mower blades and clean them between cuts to prevent disease spread - healthy grass starts with clean tools. Light and airflow matter Low winter sun and a change to trees can put your lawn under stress. Your lawn needs light to be able to photosynthesise so where necessary, prune overhanging branches to allow more light through to vulnerable areas of lawn. Regularly raking leaves prevents the blanket of tree debris smothering the lawn and helps reduce the risk of disease. Moss and fungal issues thrive in damp, low-light conditions, so improving air and light circulation is key. Feed roots, not leaves Feeding your lawn in winter isn’t essential, but it can be beneficial - particularly in warmer regions or for cool-season grasses. But it’s important to choose a formula that supports root development and soil biology – this helps to improve resistance to stress and fungal issues.
